Theoretically - yes. At this point you have 3 options:
Use the power toggle - it works fine and help will fix any out of sync condition.
delete and re-add the device, then re-download and try the buttons in device mode again
take the remote back and exchange it
There is no point in continuing to try something that you know doesn't work.
