If you don't see at least 3 wires at the head end, something is wrong. Sometimes a pair of speakers, usually the rears, can be looped using a 4 conductor wire. You need to carefully peel back the insulation and strip one pair of wires for the first speaker then make sure to use the other pair of wires for the second speaker. This is not ideal, but I have seen it done. Ideally you'd have 5 separate 2 conductor wires.
