When I bought my house I had the pre-wiring done for a home theater set-up. It looks to me like the wiring that they ran for the speakers is one (or two) continuous piece(s).

Where the wire is pulled thru the wall, it's an unbroken loop, not the + and - ends like I am used to.

I'm guessing this is the standard way of doing the wiring, so how do I hook up my speakers? Does it have something to do with hooking them up in parallel? I'm new to this, so any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Well I would highly doubt that it is correctly wired for home theater. The only time we loop wires out of a box is for volume controls. Home theater wired correctly should have at least 5 wire pulls to the main junction for your five seperate channels of theater in 5.1. Your best bet is to try to find the contractor who wired the job and they should have notes or a file on it to see how it was wired. If not a continuity tester (found on most multimeters) can help you trace and distinguish between wires that are already in walls. good luck

If you don't see at least 3 wires at the head end, something is wrong. Sometimes a pair of speakers, usually the rears, can be looped using a 4 conductor wire. You need to carefully peel back the insulation and strip one pair of wires for the first speaker then make sure to use the other pair of wires for the second speaker. This is not ideal, but I have seen it done. Ideally you'd have 5 separate 2 conductor wires.
How hard can this be?

It's probably wired for Dolby Pro-Logic. The rears are a mono config that would work with that wiring. But your out of luck for anything 'better'.

Those builders usually take the lowest bidder on wiring and not really 'care' how or why it's wired that way. Normally, I try to get in contact with the buyer if possible to get some input from them!

On a slightly more optimistic note,

They might have just shoved the bare end back into the hole, forming a loop on the outside. Try tugging on the loop and see if one end gives enough to pull lose.

I do that sometimes to keep the painters from destroying my markings. (they're still inside the wall)

Geez, do I feel like an idiot. Brent was right - they had put the bare end back into the wall. The one location I had tugged on was caught on something - when it didn't come out I thought something else was up.

Thanks for all the replies

That's why it helps to get a second opinion every once in a while... I know that I need it on occasion.

Glad I could help.

actually, there should be SIX 2-conductor wires.... one for the center channel, two for fronts, 2 for rears, and one for the sub.... the sub can also be run off of coax...
