You must have read the original Mitsubishi manual, it made me sneer too. They just assume that you would seriously put in an ALL MITSUBISHI SYSTEM. Just think, along side your $12,000 HDTV set, a $99 Mits CD, a $149 Mits Surround sound receiver etc.
But without any of the active AV network wires or other Mits components, it actually changes the way those old sets respond to IR codes and is quite useful in a pinch.
