Follow Up:
I spoke with Warren Stevens from Sonora Designs on 3/14. He told me that the receivers are made by Hughes, and that there is a problem with a ground fault in the caller ID portion of the modem. Sony doesn't have a fix as of this writing, but Warren suggested I try running a wire from the chassis to the electrical ground of the building. No promises on this one, I haven't tried it yet.
