For the serious...

The combination of sympathetic vibrations due to high SPLs and the fact that human vision is based on movement causes this phenomena.

Bass frequencies are more vibration than sound, so it is reasonable to say that lower frequencies (Barry White) exhibit this best because of their higher SPL requirements for the same volume level. This is also why motorcycle riders and Formaula 1 racers get blurred vision when driving above 150 MPH.

The eyeball merely floats on a cushion of tears in the socket in your head and it can detect one inch of movement from 100 ft away IN MOONLIGHT! The retrace frequency of a television or monitor is at a set rate and is designed to be viewed while in one position. Therefore, movement while viewing a television may distort the intended view. Ever try watching TV while running on the treadmill? Beyond 15 mins may give you a headache from your eyes trying to minimize its jitter for every step, or your brain trying to correctly translate the distorted picture it received into a usable one.
