This post is also part of the Intermission forum; however, the level of wierd in that forum is a liitle to high for an answer that has anything to do with ... Well, anything. Please pardon the repeat and share your findings if it's not too much trouble.

OK.. Down to brass tacks... I was standing about 7'-8' from a computer monitor when I burst into some sort of loud yelp or crow or maybe it was a song? Who knows, I'm sure it wasn't a very nice sound. Anyhow, the corner of my eye caught the monitor, and a good deal of "interference"... Kinda like horizontal hum bars rolling on the screen. My brother was near by. Surprised and said. "Check out the monitor... Arrghh!!" With a broad smile, I exclaimed did you see that?.. "What?" he said... "The lines!"... .. "What?!" ... "look.. Arrrgh!!.. dija see?" At this point my brother was looking at me like I lost my last screw... "On the monitor!" I exclaimed.. "When I shout like this you can see lines rolling on the screen... AAaahhh!"... "I don't see anything?!?!?"... So I said.... "You try it." Looking like he was the victim of a prank he let out a burst... "UUuuuggh!!!" Beaming, he exclaimed "I saw it!"..
The odd thing was that... I didn't!... Oddly enough, it turns out that the phenomena is only visible to the person letting fly with the yelp.... After long minutes of experimentation, we found that bellowing like two of the three tenors we could adjust both the rate and direction of the rolling "hum bars" directly proportionate to the pitch of our voice. It even turns out that the same pitch will freeze the hum bars in place! Low notes, and down they roll, high notes, and up they scroll!.... Try it yourself... Different color screens work better than others, and it's far more visible when standing away from your monitor.
Share this with your kids, or a group of people at the computer store.. They love it.. It really breaks the monotony of a dull day!
Our wives on the other hand have yet to partake in this most joyous of scientific experiments... I have no idea why??
I would love to hear the scientific explanation of my eyeball juice reaching its harmonic frequency... Any answers, or names for this phenomenon would be appreciated... Until then we're just calling it "Oculus-Linearis-Vocalis", or the "OLV effect"
Obviously I assume no liability for damage to person/s or their intergrity/relationships for individual/s use of the knowledge mentioned in the preceding study.

I experienced something similar. I was brushing my teeth with one of those Braun Powered toothbrushes and I noticed the lines rolling in the screen.

This deserves a mention in any class having to do with optical illusions!
I will bet that the loud voice vibrates the head; the eyes, being attached, also vibrate; you then perceive a vibration "on the screen" that is not on the screen, but in your receiving apparatus.
This is similar to the effect you get when you spread your fingers and wave your hand back and forth in front of a TV or monitor. Suddenly you have ten to fifteen fingers! Or when you look quickly from side to side at a projection screen showing an image made through a color wheel...the colors get messed up.
Now if you yelled real loud while waving your hand back and forth rapidly through the light beam coming from a projector with a color wheel..........

ROFL! you guys
You forgot to add "While shaking your head from side to side"
What about blinking real fast.. You know how you can see the details of a hubcap on a fast moving car while on the highway?
Soooo...
Now if while driving down the highway shaking your head from side to side, blinking real fast and yelling real loud while waving your hand back and forth rapidly through the light beam coming from a projector with a color wheel that's mounted on your dash pointing towards the car next to you so you with the really hot dubs...

No, no, no! Olive is the 9th reindeer! Remember the Christmas song, Rudolph, the Red-nosed Reindeer?
"...Olive, the other reindeer, used to laugh and call him names..."

For the serious...
The combination of sympathetic vibrations due to high SPLs and the fact that human vision is based on movement causes this phenomena.
Bass frequencies are more vibration than sound, so it is reasonable to say that lower frequencies (Barry White) exhibit this best because of their higher SPL requirements for the same volume level. This is also why motorcycle riders and Formaula 1 racers get blurred vision when driving above 150 MPH.
The eyeball merely floats on a cushion of tears in the socket in your head and it can detect one inch of movement from 100 ft away IN MOONLIGHT! The retrace frequency of a television or monitor is at a set rate and is designed to be viewed while in one position. Therefore, movement while viewing a television may distort the intended view. Ever try watching TV while running on the treadmill? Beyond 15 mins may give you a headache from your eyes trying to minimize its jitter for every step, or your brain trying to correctly translate the distorted picture it received into a usable one.

So your saying that the 43 Nascar guys all running at 190 MPH at Daytona, really cant see, and people say that they are not "real" athletes?
