After looking through more carefully I can side with NYHifi. We have used 13 Ply Marine Birch (although it is thicker than rock)with sheetrock where the studs don't line up for a symmetrical mount. I would try this if I didn't have the wherewithal to remove the whole wall area... I still pitch this first
