Hmmm.. I just doublechecked my 25U on the floor, and it does indeed use the same transport commands for DVD and VCR..... THe Indicator lights on the front of the unit dictate what is currently being controlled. You can verify this by putting a Tape and/or DVD in the unit. Shoot the "VCR" button so the units VCR light comes on, then move the remote away and press the DVD button on the remote. press play, and the VCR starts to play.
Maybe JVC has other units that are independant..... But the 25U is not.
