I can verfiy that the power commands work after turning the Energy Star mode off. I haven't tried it on any of the current models, but it worked fine on the 37 and 45 that we installed in July.
I can't remember completely, but I believe there are several commands that one might normally want to have that did not exist in the RS-232 command set. Things such as individual number keys and the like. Make sure that all the functionality you need exists in the RS-232 before you commit to using that method. IR seems to work just fine on these sets.
