Adrian, the SETUP*a*b*c* doesn't assign the code to a key. It simply sends whatever command is tied to that code. So for example, if "power" was assigned to code 123, you could--without ever touching your power key--hit SETUP*1*2*3* and the "power" command would be sent.

Every command has a code attached to it. From the factory, many commands are already attached to certain keys. However, since you have (a) the ability to send ANY command using the SETUP*a*b*c method, and (b) the ability to map ANY command to ANY key, you can use the 994 method to assign any command to any key directly.

First press the device key that you wish to program. Next, hold the MAGIC (on Radio Shack, the P) button until the remote blinks twice, then press 9-9-4. Now tap the MAGIC button, followed by the 3-digit code for your desired function. Finally, press the button that you would like to assign for this function. It's best to use buttons that do not already perform functions in the mode you are using (ex. the STOP buttons, or PLAY, PAUSE, etc... can be used in the TV mode since your TV does not use play for anything else.)
