Do you have evidence indicating that the original remote actually sends out a signal when you press VCR A or VCR B? It's much more likely that the VCR A and VCR B buttons switch modes of the REMOTE, not the console. To prove this to yourself, start by pressing VCR A on the original remote, and then completely covering the IR emitter of the remote, and pressing VCR B. If, after doing this, you find the remote is controlling VCR B, then you know the REMOTE switches modes, whereas if you find it is controlling VCR A then you'll know the CONSOLE switches modes, which is extremely unlikely.
Assuming the former scenario is what transpires, which I feel is a very safe assumption, there can be no advanced codes for VCR A and VCR B. What you need are two DEVICE codes, one for VCR A and one for VCR B.
Assuming you can find two such codes, I'd suggest putting one on the VCR button, and one on the DVD/LD button, assuming you don't have a DVD or LD already using it.
