Dave, I'm not clear on one thing from your post.
Are you saying that the remote *should* light the LED whenever I press *any* transmitting button?

I wasn't totally clear in my initial question. It seemed possible to me that that LED only lights in certain situations---like with the learning keys. But since I'm new to this remote, I don't know for sure (as I said, every other remote I've seen lights the LED on any button). The LED is obviously not burned out on my unit, which is why I started wondering if the type of performance I am seeing is normal or not.
