Another option, which works very well (but is a little bit harder to setup), is to use a special protocol called LKP (Long Key Press). With it, you can have your remote send different commands depending on how long a key is pressed.
To get this to work, you will need a JP1 cable and learn about this wonderful way to enhance your remote. Rob as written a very nice guide which will give you the basics for this solution.
