In Canada, we call knitted winter hats as "toques" (pronounced tooks). I believe in the US, they just call them hats.
I see lots of "cool" dudes wearing these hats that we in the colder climates use to keep our heads warm, not just to look cool.
Some of us do, however, wear them year round to look cool.
