Unfortunately it's not just the oil companies that make more; many governments make huge windfalls on oil price rises. So they have a vested interest in keep the price high. In Aust we have two taxes on our petrol - a government excise (fixed) and a services tax (10% on top). The services tax income has been increasing proportionally to the oil price rise
