Anybody using this with an Axim X5??

What sort of range are you getting? I assume that
the "less than 10 feet" quoted on griffins web
site is when used with their transmitter. With
the built in Irda the reange is hopeless (inches).

Using the ever-hopeless Axim X5 you can expect pretty grim performance from the audio transmitter and absolutely abysmal performance from the built-in IrDA port. This is just one of those very few Pocket PCs which are really poor for Total Remote. Fortunately Dell worked with us prior to the release of the X3 (and now the X30) to insure the IrDA port was powerful enough to be used for consumer infrared control.

I think that if you only have a limited amount
of programming time to devote to TR then perhaps
it would be a good idea to drop it's native code
and concentrate on perfecting ccf compatibility.

I might have thought that was the right answer, until a few people came forward and let me know they have no interest in becoming CCF experts just to turn their home theater system on all at once.

I had to order my "Total Remote" online. Is there
an effort to approach the Best Buys and Staples
of the world and put it in the PocketPC isle
or even the remote control isle?

Realistically, no. Best Buy has expressed considerable interest in Total Remote, but that deal has yet to go through. Additionally, and this may be the single most honest comment any PDA-based remote vendor could ever make, there is just no way to insure the same level of compatibility as found in $15 universal remotes. There, I said it. The secret is out. Now the Secret Confederation Of PDA Consumer Remote Control Software will have to call for my immediate death. PDAs were not meant to work as remotes, and it is just amazing that it works as well as it does. It is a hack of the highest caliber. Now, if I am a buyer for Best Buy and I have the choice between stocking the coolest and potentially most powerful remote control software to enable Pocket PCs to be used as a remote MOST OF THE TIME, FOR MOST DEVICES, FOR MOST CUSTOMERS, or a $15 piece of Taiwanese crap with no style but also near 100% compatibility... well, you go with what works. Due to the endless complexity of Total Remote I would HATE to have it sold in a mainstream channel to where my mother/grandmother could pick it up, completely fail to grasp it, and return it for a full refund (you have NO idea how damaging product returns are to a company, when the product is not actually defective!). TR is not a mass-market app, anymore than the Pronto is a remote that will appeal to my grandmother.

As for my first "skin", I was hoping to take a
cue from your Kubrick skin and create something
slightly starker (but still cool) called "Odyssey".
It's amazing how that aesthetic (the other word
of the day) still holds its own... in fact much
of today's graphic design vernacular seemed exemplified
in that movie.

After "odyssey", I'd hope to put some subtle 3D
skills to use on something more classic 80s videogame
style. Have you seen the PS2 game "Rez"? That
"Tron" aesthetic is also compelling, but might
not be the most ergonomic in some lighting conditions.

COOL! NEED TO SEE IT! :)

I used to use pdawin and designed a lot of ccf
files by using tonto, but I'm always searching
for something newer and easier.
The way the templates work (button mssk) is both
easier and smarter using the color codes.Another
nice thing about your program: if you ,for example,
setup a Macro to point out a device as the endpoint, you
can see the result rightaway (the same with adressing
the hardbuttons)

The thing I missed in the skins was a kind of
menu, but that was very simple to make (the manual
says it all!)
So from now on I'm controlling my equipment with
total remote instead of pdawin,in native skin.
Keep up the good works!!

You could not have done any better at sucking up to me. I mean, endearment to the point I might name my first-born "Nielsje". :)

Magnus,
Thank you for your reply. I recieved this message
from Griffin Technology today, and although I
realise they may well just be covering their asses,
I just wanted to confirm with you that you do
infact have the audio extender working (and what
sort of range you get if possible) as the unit
costs about $40 in the UK. If it does work, maybe
Don could update his tech support guys :)

--- ATTACHED EMAIL ---

Hello,

The Audio extender is not compatible with the
4150.

Technical Support

Ah. It would seem the boys in tech support were having a bad day, or have lost the fear I put into them last time they were publically caught blowing off our customers.

AFAIK, it should theoretically work. Some users have had success, some have not. We have NEVER been able to get a "bad 4150" user fixed up. There seems to be some differences in the sound control panel options, so one user may report a checkbox that simply does not exist for another user! The only thing I can suggest is Total Remote ASSUMES the audio path is "pure"; no equalization/tone contol, no "AGC", no "Bass boost", no NOTHING. If you have options for things that affect the audio path, turn 'em off!
