I think you mis-understood. In the button bitmap editor (separate utility from designer where you can create custom bitmaps for buttons) there is a "text" tool (just like in any paint program). With this tool you can type in any font available on your system and then place that bitmap onto a button.
So, it is a bit more of a hassle than just putting the text on the button but not as bad as actually drawing your own fonts.
Also, I think the original intent wasn't to get fancy -- it was to squeeze more info onto the button than the default font will allow. Although, having seen what folks have done with the Pronto, I'm sure fancy is soon to follow...
