I was using the cable that came with the rotel (or so the homeowner says). I noticed in hyperterminal when I was connected and then pressed buttons on the front panel that I was getting a lot of unexpected junk on the screen for feedback. I made my own adapter with the rotel pinout diagram and now all is working.
