Repeated tappng is used for items like Vol +/-, so that the volume ramps up or down while holding it. I don't know if using that method will cause a "repeat" on your directional pad, but it can't hurt to try. I would first try learning with a single press and hold until it says "GOOD". If you get the same results, then try the tapping method.
