No, no need to use the 994 procedure to just to
test. Press AUD, tap SET once, and enter 000,
the command will fire, and the receiver might
respond. The Reset command doesn't reset the remote,
you will lose the Radio stations you might have
programmed into the receiver itself. Let it happen,
just ontinue searching the commands till you get
to 255.

I have searched EFC's for pioneer commands many
times, I look for certain commands, when I find
them, I stop. these include:

061-CDR/TAPE, the old tape command doesn't work.
192 DVD/LD
191- Right cursor
195- left cursor
193- Down
189- Up

I never looked for the Surround command, I have
migraines, static and Surround sets them off.:(

I have non idea how you figured out that 191, 195, 193 and 189 did anything. They did nothing for me. I also found no surround controls. After running through all 255, here's all I got.
036 CD
037 Sleep 30 minutes
052 TV/SAT
061-CDR/TAPE, the old tape command doesn't work.
065 DVR/VCR
104 Cycles through devices
105 Mute
118 Video 1
119 Mute
122 Video 2
170 TUner
192 DVD/LD
234 test mode
244 power on/off
251 off

That's pretty disappointing. I sent my 6131 in to be upgraded and it really can't do 75 percent of the functions on the Pioneer 1014. Sigh. I'm pretty surprised and disappointed by this. Why send the remote in at all?
