I recently purchased an MX-500 and a Pioneer VSX-1014TX-K A/V receiver. I also had problems learning anything in the "Receiver Control" area from the Pioneer remote AXD7381. Like others here, the solution was to teach from the Pioneer remote to an intermediate learning remote, then re-teach to the MX-500. I have no idea why this would work but it does.
