A join-tenna is a device made by channel master (and no doubt there are similar devices made by other companies under different trademarks) (Im considering this for my intermittent reception of cbc-e problem)

What it does is enable you combine two antennas:
an example of what is does is:
Ant#1 filter all channels except (for example) ch20
Ant#2 allow ch20 to pass thru, but block all other channels

Thus allowing you to recieve that one awkward channel (in my case cbc-e) that's in the opposite direction of all your other channels without having to use a rotator.

Theory is sound, but the downside is that I'd be adding another device and potentially introducing more problems, and weakening the signal etc etc. - It's really a case of try it and see, and I will be trying it in the next few weeks, as soon as I get some time, and find a place that'll sell one and ship it over the border. (sadly warren electronics will no longer ship to Canada)

take a look at channelmaster.com - thay have some diagrams on there that perhaps explain it better than I have.
