Hmm, I believe it *is* part of the screen. As far as I know, the normal problem is that L1, on the back of the screen, pokes through a hole in the plastic frame inside the remote. The hole is fairly small, and often when the remote is dropped and things get shoved around, L1 is either damaged or knocked clean off the board.

At any rate, replacing the screen *should* restore your backlight.
