So now the questions is, what is actually happening to
the signal or image when it is being "upconverted".
I don't know, it varies, but the following observation indicates to me that something beneficial is happening. Play a DVD in a DVD player. Play that same DVD in a Blu-ray player. When I do this at my house it looks much better when played on the Blu-ray player. So, at least in this case, the upconversion is beneficial.
And, as I've already said, play the BD version of that DVD and it'll look better still.
