The only problem I'd have with a remote is finding the information pertaining to the IR signals themselves... Namely, being able to read the IR waveform and recognizing it to store in a more compact form, and then recreating it. I *THINK* most remotes modulate a control code onto a 40kHz carrier, but I'd have to experiment or find specifications to be sure.
