I have a friend that bought this remote, and after programming 6 units (DVD, TV, DSS, receiver, etc), the memory ran out. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm interested in getting this remote myself, but not if it has lack of memory (one of the major problems with my current Denon remote).

NONE of the codes he needed were pre-programmed? Using built-in codes saves space, even if you have to fill in the rest of the buttons with your own.

Also, make sure he's programming them correctly by HOLDING down the button until the remote's learned it. It senses a repeating code and stores it once with a repeat command, while if you say just push the button it may store it two and a half times, but with no repeat command. If when you hold a button down the "sending" graphic doesn't continue to flash or stays lit for quite a while after you release the button, you haven't done it right.

I've had to program quite a lot of my remote -- much more than I figure the norm would be -- however you should remember that NO remote has UNLIMITED memory. I haven't hit full yet.

I've programmed in the following:

Kenwood receiver (totally custom)
Kenwood receiver's tuner (totally custom)
RCA VCR (all pre-programmed)
Toshiba DVD (partially custom)
Pioneer LD (totally custom as Option)
Kenwood CD (all pre-programmed)
Digital cable box (partially custom)
Sony LCD projector (totally learned)
Panasonic tube TV (all pre-programmed)

I have yet to see any signs of full memory. In the list above, most of my equipment is being controlled by the pre-programmed codes with some partial customizations. As Daniel said, try using the pre-programmed codes first and then customize/change them from there. The pre-programmed codes, which I'm assuming are burned into ROM, will take up no memory, and the few buttons you may have to "re-teach" will then take less memory to store.

In other words ... go buy it. You won't be sorry.

Yep. It turns out he was programming it wrong. So, it looks like I'll be getting one of these remotes soon. I'm still toying with the idea of making my own.

The only problem I'd have with a remote is finding the information pertaining to the IR signals themselves... Namely, being able to read the IR waveform and recognizing it to store in a more compact form, and then recreating it. I *THINK* most remotes modulate a control code onto a 40kHz carrier, but I'd have to experiment or find specifications to be sure.
