Possibly your problem was that the Yamaha was sending a macro with the lid closed? Even if you didn't program the macros yourself, I believe the Yamaha defaults to a macro which turns on the power to the corresponding Yamaha component. With the lid open (or with the slide switch set to the macro off position), it only switches the receiver to the appropriate source mode.
