A SONY rep suggested that I turn OFF the SONY's eARC feature, but I did not try this.
One of my friends and I were discussing this exact issue and he said he just happened to try shutting off e-ARC when using a Sony TV and it seemed to fix his issue (ARC or AMP not recognizine the display).
Also, we've noticed that the problems seem to crop up more often when there's a cable box also connected to the display. The units we have around here (xfinity stuff) doesn't give the option to shut off the CEC, so we'll sometime get those inline CEC-omitter plugs (UPDATE to correct - they lift pin 13!). That will sometimes do the trick.
