I've got an LG. It turns off when the Apple TV turns off (goes to sleep). That is, when you switch away from Apple TV, you'll choose something else to watch and some three or four minutes later the TV turns off. This could be related to the problem you've solved for yourself.
Could you try a bit to remember what the "theater something or other" is? I've been through the Apple TV menu and don't remember seeing the thing that might be.

Settings > Remotes and Devices > Control TVs and Receivers. If you see Control TV with Remote instead, you need to turn that off too.
