When I was looking at receiver setup using the network, it showed HDMI to be at 1.4 across the board. It might have been set to "Auto," but the state was listed as 1.4. This wouldn't be one of those stupid things where "Auto" setting it to 1.4 won't work, but pushing buttons to set it to 1.4 WILL work, would it?

As Fred mentions, it should be backward compatible, so
I can see issues where an old HDCP source is connected to a new HDCP spec'd AVR + new HDCP spec'd TV.

shouldn't happen. Does it?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
