Moving ahead, finally, to work out what's wrong with the RX-A880 I've got. I could exchange for another one, whenever they might be delivered... but meanwhile I find the problems interesting.

Meanwhile, I think the answer is no, but it's been a long time and I'm not sure: can an HR24 be used for playback of recorded content if it has no LNB signal?
