Actually it was meant to last 2 years (it’s original warranty). You just got another year out of it under the new warranty ;)

All kidding aside, this happens (while unfortunate) with all devices from AV to toaster ovens. How the company handles things post-warranty is important and I feel the one year extension, plus the option you were presented with, is fair.
