I've installed quite a few of the Activated Design/Auton lifts and the "motor" is sealed inside a linear actuator and the linear actuator is fabricated into the lifting mechanism.  I've never had one fail so haven't had to attempt a repair, but being familiar with the product, it sure doesn't look that easy to me.

We had one fail from shipping damages bending the list and getting stuck. They had us remove it and only send back the working parts because they didn't even want it back. So I'd say you are correct
