Guys,
I just inherited a job that has a 50" Fujitsu on a lift that comes up out of an antique Chinese cabinet. The TV no longer moves either with IR commands or if hooked directly to the manual up/down buttons. It is an Auton lift made in 2002. I called Auton and talked to a very helpful tech and we surmised that the motor is toast. My question is should I spec another Auton at around $3500 or is there a less expensive lift that I should consider. I hope to talk the customer into changing out the Fujitsu with a nice 55" Sony.

I've used lifts from Auton (Activated Designs), Future Automation and Inca, but don't think any of these have a less expensive option.  Future Automation would likely be more, but in my opinion their lifts are nicer than the others.

A recent xkcd is relevant here:

Can't you put a new motor into the old lift?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

It might not be that simple.  I know the Auton lifts I've installed recently are different than the ones I installed 10 years ago.  Not sure if it was just a design change, or updates based out of necessity due to changes in the linear actuators that are used to power them.

Because the lift is 16 years old it might not be possible to source the exact actuator that was used when it was manufactured.

I brought it up because it wasn't mentioned. You never can tell whether something not mentioned has been ruled out or simply not thought of.

I think it would be an easy sell to go back with the Auton. I mean, it lasted 16 years!!!
If you go with a cheaper company and there happens to be a problem that develops say 1-2 years down the road; how does that make you look? Is the customer going to call you back again or call someone else?

Also, please make sure you are selling the correct display technology. The 50" being a plasma display, had excellent off-axis viewing. The Sony is a VA LCD panel and does NOT have good off-axis viewing. Make sure all watching are seated in the cone of view for the Sony. If the seating is all over the room with people watching from off-axis on a regular basis, then you need to sell an OLED or IPS LCD display.

AV@D used to sell a lift by itself to put into furniture, etc. Not sure of the brand but I remember it being very cheap, comparatively speaking.

I have an old lift mechanism that came from SnapAv. It's from back when they quit selling motion furniture.

Could be talked into selling it pretty cheap, since I have little use for it.

Did you get the motor out, call the manufacturer, and ask them? Did you call sales at Grainger or McMaster-Carr?

Just askin.'

We have a couple lifts going in on jobs right now and when dealing with Auton it felt like they were still stuck in the 90s. So we spec'd Nexus21 lifts. So far they work great, we'll see what happens when loaded with a 75" Sony.
I came into this game for the action, the excitement. Go anywhere, travel light, get in, get out, wherever there's AV trouble, a man alone.

Auton makes nice stuff. Their new motors are virtually silent. I think they are now using the technology from sister company Activated Designs based on their under bed lift.

Good people who have stood behind a few issues we had. Mostly shipping damages.

Joe is the tech. Art and Kerin the owners. Art can help design anything you need.

We just installed one in a 30k cabinet. Check our IG @technology_unleashed for pics
