Well both of my boats have the R/G lights at the front and a single White light at the rear.
When the R/G lights are on the White light is on. The is no way to turn on JUST the R/G lights.
Switch positions are:
Up: R/G and W
Center: All off
Down: W only

If your single white light in the rear is only a 180 degree light it is a running light and should be on with the running lights. Anchor lights need to be 360 degree.
Some of the configuration will depend on the size of the boat.
