I remember the original units (I think they were original, clients provided them and I installed a while back) having the option of battery or hardwire. When I look at the specs on their site, it says specifically hardwire or battery power for each unit. None of them say it will do both in the specs which is misleading if what you are saying is true.
no, I have an original outside my front door. It comes with the battery. but you can hardwire it and then you dont have to charge it.
