It's not you, it's Apple. I had a client give me a 5 year old gen 2 (roughly), brand new in a box, with the receipt attached. We were doing some upgrades on two levels and I said I would hook up the older gen in the Master while the 4k went on the main floor.
The 4k installed without issue while the older one wouldn't access a couple things from what I remember (iTunes and something else)…. Bricked basically.
Did the 2nd gen unit fully update? If it spent five years in a box it was likely running the original OS rev. You can do a USB restore and update via iTunes.
