Just wondering if its me.

1. one customer calls, early Apple TV has died
2. another customer with two early apple tvs in the same house - both have died
3. just got to another customers house, his apple tv has died

Is it just me?

These are all early first gen or 2nd gen apple TV's I think

I unplug and re-plug and no light and no video.

maybe it just a coincidence...

The first generation Apple TV launched 11 years ago and has a mechanical hard disk drive. Apple has officially obsoleted them and removed their access to iTunes as of May. A second generation unit is no less than 6 years old. They're cheap consumer products; it's only a matter of time before they all croak.

It's not you, it's Apple. I had a client give me a 5 year old gen 2 (roughly), brand new in a box, with the receipt attached. We were doing some upgrades on two levels and I said I would hook up the older gen in the Master while the 4k went on the main floor.

The 4k installed without issue while the older one wouldn't access a couple things from what I remember (iTunes and something else)…. Bricked basically.

Did the 2nd gen unit fully update? If it spent five years in a box it was likely running the original OS rev. You can do a USB restore and update via iTunes.

We have had multiple older units over the last two weeks lock up and require full resets. In one of the cases, we had reset the unit a couple weeks ago. It now needs it again. We haven't seen this happen before and now we've seen multiple units over a few weeks. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

The mere fact that we can ask this question, knowing that it is indeed a possibility, is as good a reason as any to assume they're doing exactly that.

They're famous for it.

But, they'll claim they're "disabling" certain elements to make it work more efficiently with today's other products and infrastructure, just like they do with older iPhones and claim that it's to reduce the load on aging batteries.

TL;DR: "It's not a bug; It's a feature! And we thing you're going to love it!"

Planned obsolescence at it's finest. Forcing customers to buy new hardware or do without.
Just one of many reasons I don't like Apple.

I had one show the Computers and Settings when I pressed Menu- once I was in settings, I saw that it had a 10.x.x.x IP address and that network doesn't have any apple stuff, so I reconnected it. I guess it's time to tell them it won't be too long for this world.

With all the bugs in the new one, it was nice having the old ones just work.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

I’ve got two customers that call every week because their rokus are frozen/locked up

Could be. I’ve been humbled by recent events and am willing to admit I can screw up

Could just be bad luck. I have lots of Rokus out there without any reported lockups.

I have no direct experience with ROKU's being nasty, but anytime I have an intermittent issue and the product uses a modular power supply, I check the power supply. Since power supplies seem to be commodity items, it makes sense to send the purchasing agent out to find the deal of the century. Shaving a few cents off the budget gets lots of "attaboy" for the agent, an off the path power supply, and headaches for the support crew.

Some units have such a bad history with me that I assume the power supply is at issue until proven otherwise. This saves an incredible amount of diagnostic time.
