In pure capitalism, any merchant who wants to compete on price alone will be kept at the point of starvation, thus guaranteeing the lowest price for the consumer.
Unfortunately, the public wants very much to believe the “as good as [...], but cheaper than” claim. The high end brands must work hard to sell their value proposition. If this fails, they’ll need to learn to swim in the price pool.
