I like the open tops. I know those of you that travel (airplanes) for work need closed top. Some had issues with tools being borrowed/stolen, so closed top it nice.
I don't use my bag when I do roughins. I bring in a sharpy and cutters and off I go. At trimouts, my bag stays with me (I don't use belt pouches).
I'm also a one man shop so no co-workers asking me borrow my tools. If I bring a once-a-year helper, I know they'll be using my tools.
Open top allows me see everything and my tote never rolled or fell while driving so no worries there.
