QAM is coming in on the coax to the cable boxes. He can choose to use QAM or ATSC for his own generated cable system in the house.

Then TVs still exist that allow the selection of both modulation methods. The TVs I know about, at least for the last few years, can't change from receiving ASTC to receiving QAM, or vice versa, without deselecting the current mode and doing a complete channel scan. "Let's check that single QAM channel!" "Okay, I've got twenty minutes!"
