We made one from scratch last year. It turned out pretty great. We included a few of the most recognizable constellations, then just filled in stars around them. One of our guys started with a couple sheets of graph paper, then we transferred that to a proportionate grid on the drywall. before it was installed. Next we poked the holes and threaded the fibers of varying diameter--constellations got 0.75mm, maybe 75% of the filler stars got 0.25mm, and the rest of the filler stars got 0.5mm. (I think those dimensions are correct.) Constellations and some of the fillers of both diameter were fed by one light engine, and the other fillers were fed by another light engine set to "twinkle". No shooting stars or anything. It is my favorite theater I've done in 12 years in the business.
