Client is interested in a fiber optic star ceiling.

1. What companies are you guys utilizing?

Looked at old threads but could not reach anyone at isky or Numinus.

Do you need to simulate any real constellations? Hopefully, they don't need to move.

We made one from scratch last year. It turned out pretty great. We included a few of the most recognizable constellations, then just filled in stars around them. One of our guys started with a couple sheets of graph paper, then we transferred that to a proportionate grid on the drywall. before it was installed. Next we poked the holes and threaded the fibers of varying diameter--constellations got 0.75mm, maybe 75% of the filler stars got 0.25mm, and the rest of the filler stars got 0.5mm. (I think those dimensions are correct.) Constellations and some of the fillers of both diameter were fed by one light engine, and the other fillers were fed by another light engine set to "twinkle". No shooting stars or anything. It is my favorite theater I've done in 12 years in the business.

How did you sequence the project? Potentially, one would have dozens or hundreds of fibers hanging through the drywall while it is being taped, sanded, then painted.

We ran the fibers, then it got taped/mudded and painted. Then we came back in and trimmed all of the fibers to length. Looked pretty good in my opinion. CShepard may have a picture with the lights off, but here is one with the lights on.

and here is one with the grid layed out on the back side of the drywall as we were running the fibers. the little pieces of tape had color coded dots for which size fiber to run.

A few of the fibers did get covered up/broken off in the process, but it was surprising how few of them did.

I have done a few theaters with them, typically as part of a whole room treatment.

Since I lack carpentry and acoustics skills, I work with these guys.

Cannot say enough good things about how they are to work with and the quality of the finished product.
I am a trained professional..... Do not attempt this stunt at home.

I have used CSI Theaters in the past and they do excellent work. They also have craftsman on staff that can do some amazing cabinetry and millwork. Give Leeford a call. www.csitheaters.com

I don't believe so although it may be cool.

Looks good, good job! What kind of light engines? The same type used for pool lighting, or something else?
Everyone should learn something new every day.

Thanks, there were 2 fairly basic led light engines running everything. I am not sure of the brand right off the top of my head.

I have also used these guys for some prefab acoustic tiles that were about 4'x7' before and was very happy with them. That job was already sheetrocked when we got called in, and the company who prewired the house had run an 18-2 to each section of the coffered ceiling, so we were kind of limited to the options. (Owner of the previous company had a heart attack and died between prewire/trimout, so we took it over)
