First of all, you can easily be immune from any kind of this "data collection". You just do not own a cell phone or any kind of electronic communications device, and also you probably should just not have internet service at your home period. You can sit around and make tin foil hats all day, and be happy that no one can hear your awful singing voice.
Second of all, I can appreciate the expectation of privacy as much as anyone else. But really, I could care less who hears anything I say at home. I have nothing to hide. Nothing incriminating going on here. So listen in all you want big brother.
Thirdly, if this story is accurate and it turns out that Amazon potentially saved a life, awesome! Yay technology! I see now downside to that at all. I have not heard of Alexa killing anyone yet, so Alexa - 1, Lowlifes - 0.
