Breaking news reports the sky is green!

Makes a nice headline, but official report is Alexa can't do that.

Unless the AI has become self aware already, Anybody know a Sarah Connors?

Why would this be bad? As Americans we aeem perfectly happy to have government monitor us all for criminal activity to keep us safe. Both Bush and Obama support it and i assume Trump since he hasnt done anything to reverse it.

Alexa is a hero.

Here's my totally unrelated nopenopenope.

Got an EM from someone moving to town. Wants to schedule an unpaid consult to do some things. Refuses to talk on the phone. Refuses to provide rough budget.

'meh....What worries me about this one is that it apparently happened without a prompt for Alexa. Alexa only heard the words "call the police" and that triggered it to call via the land line it was hooked up to (which is what I read). I think it's a perfectly fine feature for it to be able to call the police if needed. In this case for instance...what if the woman didn't have her phone with her, he's beatin her down she's on the ground and she just yells out ALEXA CALL THE POLICE! Her life could be saved. Another example, your phone is in the kitchen when someone breaks in to the house and you don't have access to your guns (well, you should call the police first if you can anyway) but you have an echo dot in the room you holed yourself up in, you can call the police that way.

Anyone watch the show Castle? If so, you'd remember that she saved his butt that once =P

I'm still with the people who are no fan of devices that could be used to listen in on you though. 100% I do not trust the government when it comes to most things, especially privacy. I wonder how many times I've said that. I wonder if I have an FBI file. (I've never been shy about expressing my disdain with certain politicians, people, and presidents...)

Three things I find strange about this story.

First... in order to have Alexa pay attention to you. You have to say “Alexa...”

Second... how was this Alexa device connected to a landline?

Third... he was 28, I assume she’s around the same age... how do they know what a landline is?

First of all, you can easily be immune from any kind of this "data collection". You just do not own a cell phone or any kind of electronic communications device, and also you probably should just not have internet service at your home period. You can sit around and make tin foil hats all day, and be happy that no one can hear your awful singing voice.

Second of all, I can appreciate the expectation of privacy as much as anyone else. But really, I could care less who hears anything I say at home. I have nothing to hide. Nothing incriminating going on here. So listen in all you want big brother.

Thirdly, if this story is accurate and it turns out that Amazon potentially saved a life, awesome! Yay technology! I see now downside to that at all. I have not heard of Alexa killing anyone yet, so Alexa - 1, Lowlifes - 0.

First - Yeah, that was my initial worry and really my only concern on this one. Me no likey.

Second - Perhaps when they (what I read) said landline they just meant a home phone, which could have been voip and on the same network? (I honestly know jack about voip services, though.)

Third - When I was 28 landlines were still a thing (kinda) and they'd have been old enough to be used to them? They had probably used them a lot when they were younger.

But whatever. Big brother is watching and listening.
