And they do a good job and seeing the studs in the wall and other objects. But it is all based on temperature differences on the surfaces. It is not perfect and has its limitations. And it is NOT x-ray.
In order to find any of your wires that aren't connected to anything. Have you tried to "liven" it up? By attaching at least the hit wire if a 120AC? I can't imagine it hurting anything as you only have the hot side and only at one end.
I've used my Zircon many times like this to find wire that was buried in a different place.
