I can't. I wish I could. I have two questions here.

STUDFINDER: I see there are a number of them out there that claim to be able to tell what is behind a wall, whether it be a stud, a water line, electrical wiring, gas lines, etc.....do you have something like that? If so, how well does it work for you and what kind is it? Cuz I need a new studfinder. My second-hand ryobi doesn't cut it.

I REALLY WANNA SEE THROUGH WALLS!: I know there is imaging equipment out there that actually WILL let you see through walls so you can physically see (via a limited spectrum) what is behind it. It sure would come in handy in projects like one of the ones I'm working on now (see the Ruckus Wireless Extender thread). Ya know, situations where your conduit ends early and there are relevant wires being free-run through the wall and you need to find exactly where their conduit ends so you can cut a hole in exactly the right spot. I know this would be an expensive piece of equipment, but, my boss CAN be convinced to buy very expensive pieces of equipment. It might be justified one day. So, what do you have and what did it set you back?

Thanks!

Being in a business where you run wires through walls, you don't think a device that allows you to see through walls would be worthwhile?

Enough years of doing retrofit and being around construction sites and you can almost almost do it with the naked eye...and a couple of creepzit rods... and an existing outlet to cheat with. But if it works WELL I'm down. I have my doubts though considering all stud liars seem to suck anyway.

A decent stud finder (whatever the most expensive one at the time at Lowes), my knuckle, a strong magnet and a tone generator/wand was all I ever needed.

But by all means if the boss is willing to drop $$$$ on X-Ray vision...have at it. Better keep a good eye on it though. That thing will walk off faster than a brand new set of festool tools.

I certainly wasn't asking for recommendations on products that work POORLY. If I wanted something that sucked I'd go to Dollar General or Harbor Freight.

Zircon stud finders have served me well for many, many years. But like all stud finders, you have to get use to their quirks to be effective with them.
I use this one:

As far as your x-ray vision. You realize that's fake right? The real ones tell you what they really are = thermal scanners. And they do a good job and seeing the studs in the wall and other objects. But it is all based on temperature differences on the surfaces. It is not perfect and has its limitations. And it is NOT x-ray.

In order to find any of your wires that aren't connected to anything. Have you tried to "liven" it up? By attaching at least the hit wire if a 120AC? I can't imagine it hurting anything as you only have the hot side and only at one end.

I've used my Zircon many times like this to find wire that was buried in a different place.

If no current flows, no heat will be caused by the hot wire being connected without a load.

I saw an add online for a camera scope that plugs into a cell phone- $14.95. Some use Bluetooth to communicate and several have a 5m cable. The diameter of the tip seems to be smaller than the Triplett version I have and that might be useful, but the one I use has done a great job for me and it wasn't terribly expensive.
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

Well I didn't use the term X-ray vision. I know that such a thing doesn't exist....yet! Hence I used the words "(via a limited spectrum)". I know that such products can only work via differences in temperature or density.

I checked out that Zircon i520, looks pretty nice for a pretty price. Something along those lines is what I was thinking of.

As it turns out, a coworker has the one directly below it on this Amazon search page.

It works pretty well for finding studs. What I like about it is that it displays the width of what it is seeing behind the wall. That's typically just the width of a stud, of course, (it would show three lights lit up next to each other...and as you move it left and right, the lights "move" as well, staying put on the stud it has found) but it can give you visual hints as to what's behind a wall as well, like blocking or previous repair work.
Everyone should learn something new every day.
