It sounds like you had a defective iPhone 7 because that is definitely not normal. Everyone has their own opinion but I really can't see how a phone milled from a solid block of aluminum could feel cheap? There is definitely no "flex" to my 7 Plus.
I doubt the phone I had somehow was milled from different material than every other phone out here. Mine was also a plus model. By comparison, the Note7 felt like a completely more solid phone. By feel alone, it just felt much better. Performance was also much better in my experiences.
