I see it like this. The only people who are really going to get uber paranoid and bent out of shape about "big brother"...etc., are those who are doing things that could potentially get them into trouble.
That's not true. Many years ago I had a discussion with some quite nice and above-board people regarding psychic ability... let's leave that where it is... and none of the group felt they would be comfortable having someone else know what they're privately thinking.
Perhaps this is an American thing. Our love of freedom has been supported by strong beliefs in personal privacy. The two things go hand in hand.
